David Laing is Director of Environmental, Health and Safety, and Lines Operations at FortisTCI, and is responsible for technical services for line processes, maintenance and other operational functions.
He joined FortisTCI in September 2012 in the capacity of Manager of Transmission and Distribution Design. Prior to joining the company, Mr. Laing worked with Fortis subsidiary Newfoundland Power in various roles from 1990, earning wide-ranging experience in several areas, including safety, project leadership, distribution planning and electrical engineering.
During his years at Newfoundland Power he was a Team Lead Coordinator as a member of the Fortis Hurricane Response Team during Hurricane Ivan in Grand Cayman in 2004, Hurricane Ike in South Caicos in 2008, and most recently, Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017 in Turks & Caicos Islands. He is an active member of the Fortis Operating Group Environmental and Safety Committees. Prior to joining Newfoundland Power he served in the Canadian Armed Forces.
Mr. Laing has a Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology from the College of Trades and Technology, St. John’s, Newfoundland. As a member of the Canadian Armed Forces, he received certification in Marine Electrician Level 3 from the Canadian Forces Fleet School in Esquimalt, British Columbia, Integral Systems Technician Course from Canadian Forces School of Aerospace Technology and Engineering, Borden, Ontario and Conductor Stringing from IHSA, Ontario.
He is also certified in Management System Auditing, Environmental Management, Occupational Health and Safety Management and OHSAS 18001:2007 Internal Auditor, all from the British Standards Institute, and Occupational Health and Safety Certification from UNB, Canada, and the Management Development Program Level 1 from Memorial University, St John’s, Newfoundland.
